Learn Your Faith: Our Lady of Good Health (Vailankanni)

Vailankanni is a small town in southern India where, in 1570 a local shepherd boy was delivering milk to a nearby house. Along the way he met a beautiful woman holding a child who asked for some milk for the child. After giving her the milk, he continued on his way and found, upon his arrival at the house, that the jug was full again. A small shrine was erected on the site where the boy had met the woman.

The second apparition is said to have happened in 1597 in approximately the same location. A beautiful woman with a child in her arms once again appeared to a young crippled boy who was selling buttermilk. The boy in his mother’s arms asked for some of the milk. After he drank it, the woman asked that the crippled boy would go into town, speak to a gentleman in the town, and ask him to build a chapel in her honor at that location. As the crippled boy set out, he realized that he had been healed of his handicap. According to some versions of the story, the boy and the gentleman returned to the site and the Lady appeared to them both. The gentleman constructed the chapel and it became a place of veneration of Our Lady of Good Health.

The third incident took place some years later when a group of Portuguese sailors were caught in a violent storm. They prayed to Our Lady Star of the Sea for deliverance. When the storm subsided, they landed at Vailankanni on September 8th (the Birth of Mary) and rebuilt the shrine. On subsequent voyages they stopped to give thanks and enhance the shrine.

Today the shrine, known as the “Lourdes of the East”, is a large church with the status of a minor basilica and is the destination of more than two million pilgrims every year. The busiest season is during the nine days of the Novena ending on September 8th.

Although the apparitions have never been officially recognized by the Vatican (probably because there is no written record of them, but only an oral tradition), the fact that the shrine was granted the status of a minor basilica by Pope John XXIII suggests an implicit, if not explicit recognition of their authenticity.

Vailankanni es un pequeño pueblo en el sur de la India donde, en 1570, un pastorcito de la localidad entregaba leche a una casa cercana. En el camino se le apareció una hermosa Señora con un niño en brazos que le pidió un poco de leche. Después de dar leche al niño, el pastorcito continuó su camino y descubrió, al llegar a casa, que la jarra estaba llena de leche. Tiempo después, y en el lugar de la aparición se erigió un pequeño santuario.

Se dice que la segunda aparición ocurrió en 1597 más o menos en el mismo lugar. Una hermosa Señora con un niño en brazos se le apareció a un niño lisiado que vendía suero de leche. El niño en brazos de su madre, pidió un poco de leche. Después de que su Niño bebió la leche, la Señora pidió al niño lisiado que fuera a la ciudad, hablara con un señor de la localidad y le pidiera que construyera en ese lugar, una capilla en su honor.
Cuando el niño lisiado continuó su camino, se dio cuenta de que había sido sanado de su discapacidad. Según algunas versiones de la historia, el niño y el señor indicado por la Senora, regresaron al sitio y la Señora se apareció a ambos. El senor construyó la capilla y el sitio se convirtió en un lugar de veneración a Nuestra Señora de la Buena Salud.

El tercer incidente tuvo lugar algunos años después, cuando un grupo de marineros portugueses fue atrapado en una fuerte tormenta. Rezaron y pidieron la intercesión de Nuestra Señora Estrella del Mar. Al cesar la tormenta, desembarcaron en Vailankanni el 8 de septiembre (el nacimiento de María) y reconstruyeron el santuario. En viajes posteriores se detuvieron para agradecer y mejorar el santuario.

Hoy el santuario, conocido como "La Lourdes del Este” es una gran iglesia con status de basílica menor y es el destino de más de dos millones de peregrinos cada año. La temporada mas visitada es durante los nueve días antes del 8 de septiembres, Fiesta del Nacimiento de la Virgen María.

Aunque las apariciones nunca han sido reconocidas oficialmente por el Vaticano (probablemente porque no hay un registro escrito de ellas, sino solo una tradición oral), el hecho de que el santuario haya recibido el status de basílica menor por el Papa Juan XXIII sugiere el reconocimiento explícito de su autenticidad.
