A Note from Father Ringley—Una nota del Padre Ringley

Our weekly Sunday Mass attendance has been holding steady for the last two months at about 450 people per weekend. It seems that this is to be the new “normal” for our parish. The weekend collection is consistently lower than it was before Covid, and this is understandable for many reasons. Nevertheless, we must continue to find ways to reduce spending and increase income as our expenses have not diminished. I am grateful to those who have continued to support us through the pandemic.

Our parishioners will recall that the diocesan wide “We Stand With Christ” capital campaign, which began when I first arrived at St. Mary’s, was to raise money for both the diocese and the parishes. The intention was that half the profit would go to the diocese and half to the parish. The Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) that year was rolled into the campaign as were the fees for the fundraising company that directed it. We are happy to announce that we have seen the first disbursement of funds come to the parish in the form of $8,800. These funds are to be spent on the projects we determined during the raising of the funds. These were the repair of the school/gym roof, the repair of the church steeple, and the repair of the parking lot. Some of this work has already been completed and paid for with parish funds. We look forward to completing those projects.

The ACA for this year is at between 85 and 90% of the goal. The in-pew solicitation brought in about $5,500. Thanks to all who contributed. There is still time to make a donation.

We have provided some new opportunities for supporting the parish while remembering friends and loved ones in our prayers. The sanctuary candles are available to be memorialized with a small offering and we pray for those intentions during the Sunday Mass Prayer of the Faithful. It is now possible to memorialize the altar flowers each week. We will include those intentions in the Sunday prayers as well. Cards will be available as they are for the Mass intentions. On the weekend of August 1st we will initiate some changes to the Mass schedule. As a result of the postpandemic reduction in attendance and income we will reduce the Sunday Masses to three: 8:00 am in English, 10:00 in Latin, and 12:00 in Spanish, thus eliminating the 11:15 Latin Mass. This change will give me and the musicians a little more time between Masses to gather our thoughts and change gears. Furthermore, the attendance at
the 11:15 is rather low. We removed this Mass (11:30 English) when Covid struck, then restored it as a Latin Mass to absorb the overflow from the 9:30 when we were permitted only 100 people in the building. There is no longer a need for this Mass. The Saturday evening Masses will remain as they are except for the fact that we can no longer justify paying a musician for either of those Masses. For this reason, (with regret) we will say “goodbye” to our longtime Spanish Choir Director and Organist Welder Gomez on August 1st. We are grateful for his years of service to St. Mary’s and wish him the best. Charlie Weaver and his assistants will cover the three Sunday Masses. Moving the 9:30 Mass to 10:00 will make that possible.

Finally, I have worked for seven years as a pastor (four at The Cathedral Parish and three at St. Mary’s) without taking a regularly scheduled day off. According to diocesan norms a priest is to have one and one-half days off each week. I have reached a point in my life where I can (and need to) have a day off each week. Therefore, beginning Monday, August 2nd there will be no Masses or Confessions at St. Mary’s on Mondays. The office and the church building will be open from 9:00 to 4:00 pm except on holidays.

We are living through a difficult time for our nation and for the Church. Please continue to pray that more men will respond to a vocation to the priesthood and that more people will respond to the vocation to live a Catholic life.

Nuestra asistencia semanal a la misa dominical se ha mantenido estable durante los últimos dos meses en alrededor de 450 personas por fin de semana. Parece que esta será la nueva “norma” en nuestra parroquia. La colecta de fin de semana es consistentemente más baja que antes del Covid, y esto es comprensible por muchas razones. Sin embargo, debemos seguir buscando formas de reducir el gasto y aumentar los ingresos, ya que nuestros gastos no han disminuido. Agradezco a quienes han seguido apoyándonos durante la pandemia.

Nuestros feligreses recordarán que la campaña de capital diocesana “Estamos con Cristo”, que comenzó a mi llegada a Santa María, tenia el propósito de recaudar fondos tanto para la diócesis como para las parroquias. La intención era que una mitad de las ganancias irían a la diócesis y la otra mitad a la parroquia. La Campaña Católica Anual (ACA) de ese año se incorporó a la campaña, al igual que los honorarios de la empresa encargada de la recaudación de todos los fondos. Nos complace anunciar que hemos recibido la cantidad de $8,800 como el primer desembolso de estos fondos. Estos fondos serán usados en los proyectos que se estipularon durante la campaña. Estos proyectos incluían la reparación del techo de la escuela / gimnasio, la reparación del campanario de la iglesia, y la reparación del estacionamiento. A partir del 1 de agosto iniciaremos algunos cambios en el horario de las Misas. Como resultado de la reducción de feligreses, y también de ingresos post pandemia, reduciremos las Misas dominicales a tres: 8:00 am en inglés, 10:00 en latín y 12:00 en español, eliminando así la Misa en latín de las 11:15. Este cambio nos dará a los músicos ya mí un poco más de tiempo entre Misas para ordenar nuestros pensamientos y cambiar de marcha. Además, la
asistencia de las 11:15 es bastante baja. El propósito de agregar esta Misa fue que durante la Pandemia solo podíamos alojar a 100 feligreses a las 9:30, dejando a varias personas por fuera. Gracias a Dios ya no hay limite para la asistencia y la Misa de las 11:15 no se justifica. Las Misas del sábado por la noche permanecerán como están excepto por el hecho de que ya no podemos pagar a un músico por ninguna de esas misas. Por esta razón, (y con pesar) le diremos “adiós” a nuestro director de coro español y organista Welder Gomez a partir del 1 de agosto. Estamos agradecidos por sus años de servicio a Santa María y le deseamos lo mejor. Charlie Weaver y sus asistentes cubrirán las tres misas dominicales.

Finalmente, les informo que he laborado como párroco durante siete años (cuatro en La Catedral, y tres en Santa María) sin tomar un día libre programado regularmente. De acuerdo con las normas diocesanas, un sacerdote debería tener un día y medio libre cada semana. He llegado a un punto en mi vida en el que necesito contar con este día libre. Por lo tanto, a partir del lunes 2 de agosto no habrá Misas ni confesiones en Santa María los lunes. La oficina y el edificio de la iglesia estarán abiertos de 9:00 a 4:00 pm excepto los días festivos.

Estamos viviendo momentos difíciles para nuestra nación y para la Iglesia. Continúen orando para que más hombres respondan a la vocación al sacerdocio y que más personas respondan a la vocación de vivir una vida católica.
