This week we will address a commonly asked question about the reception of Holy Communion, namely, “May one receive Communion more than once on the same day?”
In fact, one may receive Communion twice on the same day provided that the recipient participates in both Masses. For example, one may attend a wedding before 4:00 PM on a Saturday afternoon, and the Sunday vigil Mass on the same Saturday evening, and receive Communion at both Masses. There is no real need to receive Communion more than once a day (with the possible, and rare, exception of the danger of death). But there are sometimes good reasons to participate in more than one Mass per day, as in the above example. Therefore, because “it is in keeping with the very meaning of the Eucharist that we receive Communion each time we participate in the Mass (presuming the required disposition of the state of grace) the Church permits us to receive Communion twice on the same day if we participate at Mass twice on the same day. However, it is important to note that attendance at a wedding Mass on a Saturday afternoon does not fulfill the Sunday Mass obligation. Neither does attendance at some other Mass during the week. We usually think of the Sunday Mass obligation as our “duty” to attend Mass and receive Communion once a week. However, this is not the nature of the Sunday Mass obligation. We are not bound to receive Communion every week. In fact, the Church obliges us to receive Communion only once a year. At the same time, She obliges us to attend Mass on holy days of obligation, and participate in the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist every week, whether we receive Communion or not. This obligation, or “precept of the Church” helps us to fulfill the Third commandment, “Remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy”. Our participation in the Mass every Sunday, whether or not we receive Communion, is “a testimony of belonging and of being faithful to Christ and His Church”. We do not primarily attend Mass on Sunday for the sake of receiving Communion, but for the sake of giving worship to God. First, we offer to God the worship we owe Him as His thankful creatures. Second, we receive the grace of Christ’s Presence in His Word and in the Sacrament. This explains why we are obliged to attend Mass every Sunday while we are not obliged to receive Communion every Sunday: to give praise to God (first), and to receive Him (second). (It is better to give than to receive!) Although we usually have no reason to distinguish Mass attendance from reception of Communion remembering and trying to understand the distinction helps us to understand our proper relationship to God.
