| Thoughts on the Annunciation
I have always wondered exactly how the Annunciation took place. The text from Luke’s Gospel is not particularly detailed: “In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you”, etc. (Lk 1:26 ff.) The Vulgate has, “Et ingressus angelus ad eam et dixit”, i.e. the English is about as good a translation of that as we could hope for. One Spanish version uses, “Entró donde ella estaba…”, suggesting that the angel “went in where she was”. It remains unclear to me where exactly she was in Nazareth of Galilee. Was she in the yard, or in the house? Perhaps she was standing at the kitchen sink doing the dishes, or maybe hanging the wash on the line. I wonder if Mary was praying quietly by herself in her bedroom when the angel “came to her”? Did the angel communicate with her in a spiritual way without her seeing or hearing anything visible or audible? Or could Mary see a visible angel with big, puffy wings and a halo around his head speaking aloud in her native language? [Remember that angels are pure spirits and do not have bodies, although St. Thomas reckons that they can “assume” them when God would have them do so (Summa Theologica: First Part, Q. 51 Art. 2)]. But that’s another matter. In the end, we do not know how the angel communicated God’s message of the Incarnation to Mary, but we know that he did. We can be sure she was not watching “The Price is Right” on TV, nor texting her BFF. Whatever she was doing, and wherever exactly she was, she was listening for God. That’s why she heard. Reflexiones acerca de la Anunciación
Cada año en este día de la Anunciación me pregunto exactamente como pasó este acontecimiento. El texto de San Lucas no nos da muchos pormenores: “En el sexto mes fue enviado el ángel Gabriel de parte de Dios a una ciudad de Galilea llamada Nazaret, a una virgen desposada con un varón que se llamaba José, de la casa de David. La virgen se llamaba María. Y entró donde ella estaba y le dijo: “Dios te salve, llena de gracia, el Señor es contigo” (Lucas 1:26 y siguiente). El latín dice: “Et ingressus angelus ad eam et dixit” que es más o menos la misma cosa. El ingles da: And he came to her and said, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you”. Mi punto es, el texto no nos explica exactamente donde in Nazaret de Galilea estaba María cuando el ángel entró. ¿Estaba en casa, o en el patio? ¿Estaba limpiando los platos, o colgando la ropa en la línea? Me pregunto si María estaba sola orando en silencio en su habitación cuando el ángel “entro donde estaba”. ¿El ángel comunicó su mensaje en una manera puramente espiritual en que María no oyó ni vio nada audible ni visible? ¿O era que María vio un ángel visible con alas grandes y magnificas, y una corona, que habló en su idioma nativo? [Se recuerde que los ángeles son espíritus puros que no tienen cuerpos, sino San Tomás dice que pueden “asumir” cuerpos si Dios quiera [Summa Theologica: Primera Parte, Q. 51, Art. 2)]. ¡Es otro tema! En resumen, no sabemos exactamente como el ángel comunicó el mensaje de Dios a María acerca de la Encarnación, pero sabemos que lo hizo. Estamos seguros qué María no miraba la televisión ni estaba “texting” su BFF. Lo que María hacía exactamente, y donde estaba exactamente en el momento del mensaje incluía escuchar intensamente a Dios. Por eso, ella oyó. Para nosotros, y por ahora, saber esto es suficiente. |
